Kāvya: Poetry In Motion

Kāvya: Poetry In Motion is an original Silambam Houston production, born from the vision of artistic director Lavanya Rajagopalan. Presented May 1, 2026 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts (Zilkha Hall) as part of the Houston Is Inspired residency, this evocative show masterfully interweaves music, dance, and poetry to illuminate a profound truth: that despite separations of culture, language, and time, fundamental human emotions serve as an intrinsic unifying force.

The production is divided into six thematic chapters — new beginnings, wanderlust, nostalgia, woman, loss, and inclusion — each driven by poetry spanning centuries and continents. Verses range from 13th-century Sufi poets and 17th-century Japanese haiku to Gaelic, Estonian, Dutch, Spanish, Tamil, and English voices from the 19th through 21st centuries, including Rumi, Maya Angelou, Pablo Neruda, and Rabindranath Tagore. Those texts are woven into a musical score across classical and contemporary genres and brought to life through Indian classical dance.

For lighting, the challenge was supporting that emotional arc — shifting mood, palette, and focus as each chapter moved through a different human experience, while keeping dancers, musicians, and poetry legible on a professional Hobby Center stage. The sold-out premiere marked one of Silambam's most ambitious productions to date.
